Don’t collect more reviews — connect the listing AI already uses

If you already have G2 or Capterra reviews, “get five more” is not the fix. AI cited the platform for someone else. Here is what to do instead.

“Collect five more reviews on G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and Product Hunt” is a lazy plan if you already have a profile. Buyers did not skip you because you have 47 reviews instead of 52. They skipped you because the model retrieved a competitor’s listing on a platform it already trusts. More stars on an unconnected entity will not change the sentence.

The check (five minutes)

Look at a real AI answer for your category, or at the citation list in a live test.

  • Did ChatGPT, Google AI, or Perplexity cite g2.com, capterra.com, or similar?
  • If yes, open that URL. Is it your product page, a category page, or a competitor?
  • Search site:g2.com "Your Product Name" (swap the host for whatever was cited).

If the listing exists and the AI answer still named someone else, do not collect more reviews this week. Connect the listing you have.

What “connect” means

  1. The profile title is your exact product name — not a parent company nickname the model cannot match.
  2. The website field is the same domain you use on the homepage and in schema.
  3. Your homepage Organization (and Product, if you have it) sameAs includes that profile URL.
  4. About or pricing copy uses the same string as the listing.

That is how you become the thing on G2 the model already decided to trust for the category. Farming testimonials is a different job, for later.

When first reviews are the right job

If the engines cited the platform and a listing search finds nothing, then create the profile and get the first reviews under the exact name. That is a missing source. It is not “aim for five on every logo in the footer.”

If the engines never cited that platform at all, skip it. You are not going to invent a retrieval path by opening an account they did not use in the test.

What to do this week

  1. From one live answer, write down the review or directory hosts it actually cited.
  2. For each, search whether you already have a URL.
  3. Existing URL → sameAs, matching name, matching domain. Stop chasing volume.
  4. No URL → create the listing and first reviews. Stop when that exists.

The diagnostic on this site follows that split in the 12-step plan. It does not scrape G2 for a vanity score. It uses the three-engine citation list, then a site search for your name, so the task is either create or connect — not homework to go find out.

Frequently asked questions

We have hundreds of G2 reviews. Why would a report still mention G2?

Volume is not the same as being attached to the query. If the engines cited G2 for a competitor and not your profile URL, the job is connecting that existing listing — exact product name, website, and sameAs — not farming more stars.

When is collecting first reviews actually the right task?

When a live test cited that platform for your category and a listing search did not find you. Then create the profile and get the first reviews under the exact product name. That is a missing source, not a volume problem.

Should I join every review site?

No. Use the domains that appeared in ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity answers. A generic “get listed everywhere” list is homework. Named destinations from the test are the plan.

Where does this show up in the AI Can't Find Me report?

The 12-step plan. If we find your listing, the step says connect it. If we do not, it says create a listing and first reviews. We do not scrape G2 for a score. We use citations from the three engines plus a site search for your name.
