Google AI Overview skipped you — here’s the check
You can rank on Google and still be missing from the AI Overview. Here is how to tell the difference, and what to fix first without buying another dashboard.
You can sit on page one of Google and still be absent from the AI Overview. That is not a glitch. The Overview is quoting a passage it can lift. If your answer is below a hero, a form, and three paragraphs of brand story, a competitor who led with the answer gets the citation. Ranking and being quoted are related. They are not the same job.
The check (five minutes)
- Open a private window. Search the query a customer would actually type: best [category] in [city], or who to hire for [job] near [city].
- If an AI Overview appears, write down every domain it cites. You are either in that list or you are not.
- Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the same question. Note who they name.
- Search your own brand name. If they can describe you when asked directly, but will not volunteer you, you have a discovery problem.
Do this on the queries that make you money, not vanity keywords.
What the Overview is actually doing
Google has been clear that AI features use the same index as Search. The extra step is passage selection. The system fans a query out into sub-questions, then looks for blocks it can quote. Pages that answer in the first 75–150 words get used. Pages that warm up for 800 words get summarised from someone else.
That is why a site with weaker design and a plainer first paragraph often wins the box.
Fixes that are worth doing this week
Unblock the crawler. If Google-Extended is disallowed in robots.txt, you can rank and still be ineligible for some AI uses. Check https://yoursite.com/robots.txt before you rewrite copy.
Lead with the answer. On the page that should win the query, first screen: who you serve, where, what you do, what it costs or how you work. Then the rest of the page.
Cover the follow-ups. People Also Ask on that query is a decent list of the sub-questions the Overview is assembling. Your page should answer the top few in plain sentences, not in a PDF.
Re-test. Same query, new screenshot. That is the baseline. Without it you are guessing.
A crawl score that says “schema present, robots fine” can still miss this, because the customer never sees the crawl score. They see who got named in the box.
If you want the named-competitor list across ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity plus a 12-step sequence — that is the one-time diagnostic this site sells. One payment. No subscription.
Frequently asked questions
If I rank on Google, why would an AI Overview skip me?
AI Overviews pull passages from pages Google already knows. Ranking nearby is not the same as having a short, extractable answer at the top of the page. The overview often cites a competitor who stated the answer in the first 75–150 words.
How do I check if I am in the Overview?
Search your real customer query in an incognito window. If an AI Overview appears, note the cited sources. Then search the same intent on ChatGPT and Perplexity. You are looking for who got named, not just whether you rank below the box.
Is this a separate Google index?
Google says AI features use the same index as regular search. The selection step is different: it is choosing a passage to quote, not a blue link to rank. Buried answers lose.
What should I change this week?
Put a direct answer in the first screen of your main service page. Unblock Google-Extended in robots.txt if it is blocked. Re-run the same query and screenshot the Overview.
